The party awakens in their new home to the sounds of chaos. Two dragons are fighting above the city of Windhelm. They rush out, and are immediately met with the screams of the people of Windhelm. Chaos, cries, and destruction surround them. A nearby guard is hit by a nearby dragons flame. As he is saved by his fellow guards, the group hears them shout to get survivors to the Palace, as that is the only safe place at the moment. They are then attacked by a small black dragon. Attempting to disengage with the creature, they try to turn down a side street, but are stopped by flames and burning buildings. Seeing they are up against a fight they really do not want to face at this moment, Nirius grabs Ra'Giin and casts dimension door just as he calls out to Ephrya to meet them at the Palace. They teleport to the steps of the Palace of the Kings just as Ephyra does the same.
Sal and Rynly tend to the people who are hurt and attempting to enter the palace. Once inside, they see multitudes of injured, scared townspeople. Mages are going from person to person, offering healing potions and tending to wounds. Guards are running out to help with the confusion and calamity outside. The group sees the Jarl, who is working hard to tend to his people. A guard runs up to them just as they reach the Jarl and he tells him that the dragons were seen going down just west of the city gates, and that one of them looked gravely injured. The Jarl looks to the group. He tells them they have already proven themselves to him once, time to do it again. He instructs the group to take care of the dragon.
They rush out of the Palace, heading towards the gates of the city. As they make their way out, Ephyra is charmed by the song of a harpy who is watching them from the roof of a nearby building. She wanders towards the harpy as a few Scamps join in on the battle. The group defends against the harpy and is able to dispose of her and continue their way towards the dragons.
As they leave the city and go west, they see the two dragons fighting on the ground. One dragon, the gold, is severely injured with a torn wing. The other dragon, the black, slashes against him. The group notices a rope around the gold dragons neck with a small satchel attached. The black dragon swipes at the satchel, successfully grasping it. Once he has it in his claws, he quickly flies away.
They rush up to the gold dragon, who assumes they are there to attack them. He speaks in Dovazhuul, a language that Nirius understands. He tells them he failed to protect the orb, that he does not have it so to attack him would be useless. Nirius assures him they are here to help and that they too are attempting to protect the orbs. The dragon, who says his name is Thaarnvursos, explains to him that he has been a guardian of this orb in Blackreach for many years. Many daedra infiltrated Blackreach in order to find the orb so he took it and left. He tells the group that he was on his way to bring the orb to the Knights of the Spire, when this dragon attacked him. He tells them that this black dragon is helping to obtain the orbs for a power hungry Dunmer. The group tells Thaarnvursos about Drathis. Thaarnvursos tells them they must reach the crown before Drathis does. Nirius asks how they can get to the crown. The dragon explains that long ago, Sheogorath became enraged over mortals going to his plane, so he threatened the Mages in order to keep them from sending adventurers through portals. According to legend, there were multiple locations in which portals remained on Nirn. Thaarnvursos tells them the closest one would be on a small island in the Sea of Ghosts.
After Nirius translates the conversation to the group, Ra'Giin extends his hand and places it on the dragon. He drains his life essence into Thaarnvursos, healing him. The dragons wounds are partially healed. Ephyra asks him if they ever are in a situation of need, if they could seek him for aid, a request he assures he will do his best to uphold. He tells them he must attempt to retrieve the orb from the black dragon, and they must go to the Shivering Isles to retrieve the crown.
