C1 Session 28: A Sea of Ghosts and Krakens

Standing upon the small island, the Keepers of the Oath can make out two ships through the fog, each coming from two opposite directions. They can make out one belonging to the East Empire Company, which is lowering a small rowboat and heading their way. The boat, with Sal and Rynly aboard, gives the rest of the group a ride back to the ship, beginning their three day journey back to Windhelm. Ra’Giin, Nirius and Ephyra catch the two up on the conversation with Thaarnvursos and the events in The Shivering Isles.

During their first night, Sal takes watch to look out for the other ship, Ra’Giin studies the book on light magic and learns that most of the magic utilizes gamma rays and the rest settle in for the night.

The next day, Sal asks Ephyra if she could possibly cast sending to Thaarnvursos to ask him if had success in retrieving the orb that was taken from him by the black dragon. She is hesitant, as she fears bothering Thaarnvursos too often as it has only been 3 days. He attempts to convince her that since they now have the crown in their possession, it would be beneficial to team up with him. They agree to ask the rest of the party.

While Sal goes to find Nirius, Ephyra speaks with Ra’Giin. He shows her the book he has been studying and then hands her the book of poetry, The Pepidexicon of Knaardge. He says maybe she would get use of it but tells her to be careful as it is poetry that seems to have been written by someone who is mad. He says he had originally intended to offer it to Skooma Cat, but considering the previous day's events, changed his mind. Ephyra wonders about the connection between Sheogorath and Ra’Giin, so she asks him further. Ra’Giin says he knows him as much as anyone could and he tells her a little of his past, his mother and how he came into drawing the attention of Sheogorath through his anarchy and chaos.

Sal and Nirius join them and Sal tells them that he suggests sending Thaarnvursos a message to see if he needs assistance. Nirius reminds them that they need to get the crown to the Knights of the Spire. They speak about the Knights and the necessity of getting the crown to them as soon as possible. Ephyra expresses her fear that Thaarnvursos is being scryed upon and she doesn't want this information to get out. However, they decide they will message both the dragon and the Jarl of Windhelm before sleep.

During the remainder of their day, RaGiin helps himself to the ship's kitchen and promptly boils the flesh off of one of his skulls.

Ephyra casts sending before the group goes to sleep for the night. She first sends a message to Thaarnvursos, though she must repeat her message in Dovazuul with Nirius and Sal translating for her. She tells him the Keepers of the Oath have the crown. He responds by telling them to get to the Knights.

She then sends a message to the Jarl stating that they have acquired the crown but they need directions to the Knights. The request to leave once they dock at Windhem. He commends them with a job well done, telling them he has something for the party once they arrive. He tells them he can only show them the way to the Knights, he cannot send assistance.

Ra’Giin tells the rest of the group that, if possible, he would need to stop by Riften if it is at all on the way to where they are going. The group questions this choice and he assures them it is necessary.

Nirius attempts to commune with Yffre before sleep. He asks for his family to be watched over, to let them know that he is still alive and he plans to see them soon. Ra’Giin communes with Nocturnal, giving offerings. She tells him that he has been the safest place for the key, but that he must return it as his safety is waning. She tells him that his guild is growing, that the leadership he has placed is honorable.

The next day while Ra’Giin and Sal practice dueling and Nirius and Ephyra begin a conversation, a large tentacle reaches out of the sea and strikes the boat, as the crew begin to go into a panic to fix the ship and steer the ship out of reach. The group enters into a long battle with a Kraken. Ra’Giin attacks immediately, dealing necrotic damage to the giant beast. The Kraken succeeds against Ephyra’s attempt to cast suggestion, but Nirius is able to cast banishment and the ship is able to put 100ft between them and the creature.  The group rains down attacks when the Kraken returns. Nirius fires Eldrich Blast, bow attacks from Sal and spell attacks through FIra, Ra’Giin’s familiar. The group is all hit with lightning from above and the Kraken is able to hit and grapple the ship. Nirius casts banishment once more, sending the beast into another dimension. Once the Kraken returns, a hailstorm of flame skull and arrows are thrown at the beast. The Kraken attacks Ephyra and throws her, luckily landing on the far end of the ship and not in the sea. With a final attack of Eldrich Blast from Nirius, the Kraken is defeated.
