The party's journey took a deeply introspective turn as they continued their voyage toward the volcanic isles of Shal'Toka. Kit, driven by unanswered questions and an inexplicable connection to the enigmatic god Veddon, sought clarity through meditation. In the stillness of the lookout, their communion with the deity revealed unsettling truths. The imposing figure of Veddon emerged from the shadows, a towering presence clad in black metal armor and crowned with horns. Their conversation hinted at a deeper purpose, but the god’s aura was as disconcerting as it was powerful. Dreams that followed were no less ominous, pulling the seeker into visions of an endless ocean, a decaying city, and shadowed figures offering both power and despair.
Amid this inner turmoil, the rest of the group busied themselves with practical tasks. Freeya assisted Cuervo in crafting his shotgun, while Mello enlisted Cuervo’s aid in designing a contraption to fire potion-filled bullets. Despite moments of progress, the air was thick with anticipation and unease, especially as the group neared the smoking volcano of Shal'Toka.
Navigating the treacherous waters around the island proved hazardous. Four hours of sailing revealed debris from a shipwreck, the ominous presence of a shadowing vessel, and an encounter with a dragon turtle. The party managed to persuade the massive creature to leave, but not before their ship suffered damage. Hal and the crew stayed behind to make repairs while the adventurers headed ashore.
Reaching the island was no less fraught with peril. As the boat neared land, jagged rocks and crashing waves took a toll, leaving Blossom, Porthos, and Cuervo worse for wear. Cuervo scouted ahead, reporting a plume of smoke rising inland. Upon landing, the group discovered footprints leading away from the shore and decided to investigate.
The trail led to an unsettling encounter. Following the sound of footsteps, they stumbled upon a campfire and seven figures—Rifters, including one tall, veiled dark elf adorned in long robes and a chain. Freeya attempted to mask the group’s presence with a cascade of leaves, but the Rifters began their search.
A tense standoff ensued. Kit climbed a tree for an advantageous position while Porthos grappled the veiled figure. In a swift and brutal maneuver, Kit fashioned a noose, executing the dark elf by dropping from the branches and severing her head. The group discovered a cryptic note on her body, leaving them with more questions than answers.
As the volcano rumbled ominously in the background, the party steeled themselves for the dangers yet to come. Shal'Toka was proving to be as hostile as it was mysterious, and whatever secrets it held were bound to test their resolve.
